TECO's ''Amazing Music and Dance'' Enters National Library's Digital Archive to Champion Indigenous Cultural Sustainability

2025/08/01

TECO Technology and Culture Foundation, a long-standing advocate for the preservation and revitalization of Taiwan’s indigenous cultures, has been invited by the National Central Library (NCL) to participate in the special exhibition Interwoven Realms: Resonance of Indigenous Wisdom and Memory. As part of this collaboration, the Foundation’s acclaimed ‘’Amazing Dancing and Music’’ audiovisual archive has been officially incorporated into NCL’s Digital Audio Visual Archive System.

In recognition of the Foundation’s decades of commitment to indigenous education and cultural documentation, NCL presented Foundation with a certificate of appreciation during the exhibition’s opening ceremony on August 1, honoring its significant contributions to safeguarding Taiwan’s cultural heritage.

Dr. Lee, Chairman of TECO Technology and Culture Foundation, remarked ‘’Culture is not merely about preserving memories, it is a motion for innovation. Our Foundation has long supported Indigenous education and cultural revitalization, empowering the younger generation to carry their stories farther and wider. This collaboration with NCL is not only a milestone in the digital preservation of traditional music, dance, and ritual but also a meaningful act of intergenerational and intercultural co-creation.”

Digitizing Performance and Sustaining Heritage: TECO’s Enduring Commitment to Indigenous Education

Since 2003, the Foundation has led the ‘’Exclamation Mark Project – The Indigenous Sustainable Education Program,’’ partnering with more than 40 indigenous communities across Taiwan to build a people-centered, culture-rooted knowledge transmission. Over nearly a quarter-century, this initiative has documented and revitalized cultural heritage through community collaboration, and this year marks its ninth nomination at the Golden Melody Awards for Traditional Arts.

These high-definition audiovisual records reflect the convergence of traditional Indigenous culture with contemporary performing arts. Beginning in 2025, this collection will be fully accessible through NCL’s Digital Audio Visual Archive System, ensuring broader public access and long-term preservation.

The initial batch of digitized content includes 12 full-length ‘’Amazing Music and Dance’’ performances from 2016 to 2024, along with four traditional music albums featuring the Bunun, Tsou, Rukai, and Paiwan peoples. These works are accompanied by rich supporting materials—program notes, scripts, lyrics, musical scores, performance photography, and more than 60,000 portrait photographs—offering an invaluable resource for researchers, educators, and the public.

These invaluable materials can be accessed through the curated section of the Digital Audio Visual Archive System by selecting ‘’Exclamation Mark Project – The Indigenous Sustainable Education Program.’’ (https://dava.ncl.edu.tw/)

The exhibition ‘’Interwoven Realms: Resonance of Indigenous Wisdom and Memory’’ is on display at the National Central Library from August 1 to September 22. Featured sections ‘‘Amazing Music and Dance Indigenous Audiovisual Resources’’ and ‘’Portraits of Taiwan’s Indigenous People’’ showcase the Foundation’s extensive archival contributions, offering diverse and layered perspectives on the culture, knowledge systems, and lived histories of Taiwan’s Indigenous communities.
